Vinifying Pinot Noir was – and still is – a challenge: it is a capricious and delicate grape variety, hard to handle and very sensitive to the characteristics of the year and the climate. But there were the right conditions for it to grow well: surprisingly suitable soil, a favourable microclimate – cool and with good fluctuations in temperature between day and night.
Over the years we have studied it, applied our findings, innovated and researched, and now we know exactly how to handle it, in the vineyard and in the cellar. We watch over it constantly to make sure we harvest it at just the right time, as soon as it reaches the perfect balance between roundness and acidity: this results in a fresh, elegant wine with soft, velvety tannins. But without being a lightweight: on the contrary, it has all the character of the Piedmont wines known for their great ageing potential, with the longest cellar-life.
In the 19th century, Carlo Gancia pioneered the great Italian tradition for sparkling wines in Canelli, just a few hills away. This is why, in 2011, we joined the Consorzio di Tutela Alta Langa DOCG, custodian of and heir to that tradition.
We cultivated the right grape varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. We were already adopting agricultural and oenological techniques that emphasised the typicality of our soil: minerality, freshness, salinity and savouriness, characteristics that enhance the unparalleled elegance of the two grapes.
With the 2011 vintage, we celebrated the beginning of a new chapter in the history of our land. After being hand-picked, the Pinot Noir grapes grown in a high-hill vineyard in Miocene sandstone marl soils spent 120 months resting on lees in Magnums, benefiting from the excellent relationship between the micro-oxygenation of the cork and the qualities of the wine.
The slow and patient work of time allowed the wine to express its full potential and in 2022 we disgorged a Rosé with an evolution, creaminess and complexity beyond all expectations.
